I love it when Martha goes white trash

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

OK, so did anyone else spot the article on worm composting in this month’s Martha Stewart Living? This cracks me up!

My family has deep southern roots, and my Papaw (translation: Grandfather) had one of these at their place in Georgia. Only it wasn’t in a rubber tub purchased special, it was in an old fridge from the side of the road. And he wasn’t trying to compost, he was growing worms so he could go fishing.

We used to go out every evening and feed the worms. The fridge was under the huge old plum tree out back. The worms got table scraps and chicken feed. Yup, chicken feed. We’d stand there as the sun went down and watch them come up for the food.
It’s a great idea and all, but it seems odd to me to buy worms. I am also pretty sure they never got a bed of soaked newspapers, or air holes, and I know he never worried about ratios, just dumped stuff in. But it worked.

Progress

This is what I love about a raglan sweater…once you get past the initial math you quickly get to the “wow! It’s a sweater point”

The girls were my photographers:

Little-sis told me to look more interesting …I swear I tried

I am thinking it wouldn’t be too hard to create an Intant-O-Matic Raglan creator. Punch in some measurements and out pops a pattern. Shouldn’t be hard in Java Script.

The goal:

I’m not sure quite where I want it to hit on the waist. Again, the great part about a raglan…just try it on and see what works.

Brilliant idea!

Look at this over at Crafster…too clever! It’s an entertainment center turned into a kitchen for kids to play in. I love this idea! We’ve talked about doing this with the pre-fab kitchen cabinets from the hardware store, but this is much better.

I think my favorite part is that they wallpapered!

Pinch Prevention

Big-sis is terrified of St. Patty’s day this year. She’s convinced that she’ll forget to wear green, and we all know what happens next.

So we spent part of the weekend making sparkly t-shirts for St. Patty’s Day. We just used cheapo acrylic paint and sprinkled on glitter while it was still wet. Total cost for 2 shirts was about $8, including the plain shirts.

I posted a freezer-paper stencil how-to over on the main Handmade Mom site. The stencil for the Good Luck shirt is also there to print out. Enjoy!

Patches

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

As I mentioned a while back, big-sis is tearing through her pants. I do not want to replace them right before we get to shorts weather,  so I have been patching away.

Here’s the latest. She wanted an elephant. I added the ball because the elephant wasn’t quite big enough to cover it all.

Looks like a hit!

Knitter Down!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

Like a moron I slammed my hand in the car door the other day. One of those idiot, in a hurry, not thinking, things. I am having to take a few days of rest from actually crafting anything. Nothing broken, but ouch!

Honestly it has been kind of a nice break(no pun intended). I have been able to spend some time sketching plans for the May issue of Hand Made Mom, and hopefully I’ll have some good stuff ready.

The girls are also giving lots of input into what they want for their summer wardrobe. I have a fabric run planned for later this month.

The sketches are in one of those snappy Pocket Mod things. I am so hooked on them!
